Stereotypes

Work has been a bit nuts lately.

Thursday night, 12:30 AM I realized something. I was sitting at my desk (yes, at work) with cool ranch doritos on my right, a mountain dew on my left. I looked down at my growing gut, and wondered when I was going to have the time between everything else I do to exercise more and eat a bit better.

Did you know that you can keep a legion of programmers locked in a dark basement with only cheetos and mountain dew for sustenance, as long as they have internet access?

Yes, some stereotypes are based loosely on the truth.

Well, I thought it was pretty funny, in a self-deprecating sort of way.

I've not forgotten you all, but time has been tight lately. I have too much I want to do and not enough time to do it all. We are slowly recovering mentally from our hospital stay. Our youngest is pretty well back to normal at this point, so it's a matter of finding our groove again.

But tonight my wife and I are actoually going out. Together. Without kids. It's going to be wonderful! The last time this happened our youngest was un a drug induced speel fest in the ICU. We need to get out together more. Here's hoping this begins a new trend.

How often do you get out with just your spouse? Or if you're not married, how often do you get out on a date?

We get out without the kids a couple times a year, if that. I wanted to go to the new casino tonight, but we don't have a sitter, and I have to be up at 4:30 am to go to work. What fun.

Even in days BS (before Sparky), we weren't going out much, especially at night. Most of our "dates" were during the daytime on weekends, when we'd go out and do whatever.

Now, with Sparky around, we have one night a week without her. Sunday night. Not much goes on Sunday nights. Even if it were Saturday night, we probably would opt to stay in and relax rather than go out.

I had a class on microcontrollers where we used assembly language and C++. I spent so much time on it, that I hoped to never see it again. Then, in my first job I sat down at my desk and was shown an old school control system software based on the Motorola HC12, the same one that I had the class on. Since, I have programmed a dozen control schemes and overcome my fear of assembly language. My last project was on an anodic protection system for an acid cooler. Soon the entire system will be ripped out and likely replaced with the Siemens PCS 7 or ABB 800XA control system which runs on structured text and block diagram type program. I know little about either, but I will learn.

At least once a week, I stop by the gas station on the way to work and get two big bottles of mountain dew which I usually devour before noon, barring any long meetings or pressing issues.

Long time no see. It would be good to chat with you some time. My phone is 208-637-8211. I even have a myspace page with my family and all.

Nobody - :(

blogarita - it sounds like you may not have gone on a ton of "dates" with your spouse, but at least you have some time to spend together. That's what it's all about.

Cook! Yeah, it's been a while! You're quite brave posting your phone number for the world to see. Not that many people drop by here, and at least those that do are classy folks. Good to hear from you. I'll see what I can do to track you down. =)

My wife and I have discovered that we're quite the home-bodies. She loves reading, and I love playing video games. So... more than anything, I just make sure to kick her out of the house (without the kids) every once and awhile, so that she keeps sane.

Kinda like Blogarita, we get out during the day sometimes. But even if we have free babysitting, we'll usually just do dinner and then head home once the kids are in bed. Some may call it sad; we call it doing what we love.
